Similar to typical sulfonic acid compounds, it is a relatively strong acid with a colorless solid appearance and is soluble in conventional organic solvents. This compound is commercially available and can be prepared by the sulfonation reaction of camphor with sulfuric acid and acetic anhydride. In organic synthesis, CSA and its derivatives can be used as chiral resolution reagents for the resolution of chiral amine compounds and other positive ion compounds. For example, 3-bromocamphor-8-sulfonic acid can be used in the synthesis of optically pure divaxipi.
